Description

Central image of a cut-away detailed illustration of a Soviet T34 medium tank showing crew positions etc, with a further T34 in right rear. A Josef Stalin JS3 122mm heavy tank with crew, left rear. A training area demonstration, with spectators on wooded hillside to rear. Probably produced for the Illustrated London News. Coloured wash and ink with bodycolour, on art board. Signed with stylised signature, incorporating date, 1950. Artist's stamp verso "G H Davis, 27 Queens Road, Brighton Sussex" 19 x 30 ins

The artist

One of the finest exponents of the "cutaway" graphic illustrations of aircraft, ships, tanks and engineering of the 20th century. Davis was a staff artist for the "Graphic" and the "Sphere" & Chief Staff Artist of "The Illustrated London News.
