Biography and current catalogue for
Prosper Lecourtier (1851-1924)
Born at Gremilly, Meuse, France on 12th July, 1851, Lecourtier had a successful career while exhibiting at the Salon between approximately 1879 and 1902. He had studied under two great masters, Emmanuel Fremiet (1824-1910) - one of France's foremost animaliers - and Coutant. Perhaps his greatest accolade was a bronze at the Exposition Universelle in 1900. All his animals are individualised and lifelike with great appeal and this is best seen in his studies of crouching lions. All his works are signed with a crisp signature. He died in Paris around 1924.
