Frank Hodgkinson AM (1919-2001)
Born on 23rd April 1919, at Ashfield, Sydney, Australia, Frank Hodgkinson was at the forefront of the Abstract Expressionist movement in Australia in the late 1950's and early 1960's. He was the youngest in a family of 3 boys and a girl and their great uncle was the Pre-Raphaelite artist Sir John Everett Millais. Frank's father, Henry, was a highly skilled signwriter and decorator.
Frank and his older brother, Roy, served as War Artists during World War ll. Frank saw action in Borneo, Papua New Guinea (including the infamous Kokoda Trail), Syria, fighting the Vichy French and in the Western Desert. He was mentioned in despatches for gallantry in Papua. He left the Australian Army as a lieutenant in 1946.
After the War, he continued his studies at Central School of Art, London and at La Grande Chaumiere in Paris. From 1947, he lived and painted in Paris, Florence, Rome, Madrid, Majorca, the USA, PNG and back in Australia.
He died at his Kenthurst home, on the outskirts of Sydney, on 20th October 2001, aged 82.
