Josef Herman OBE RA (1911-1999)
Born in Warsaw, Josef Herman studied at the Warsaw School of Art from 1930 to 1932. He left Poland in 1932 to work in Brussels, where he was influenced by Permeke. Two years later he moved to Glasgow and after a short time he settled in Swansea Valley. During this time he established his reputation as a painter of figurative subjects, capturing especially well the toils of miners and labourers. In 1948 Herman became a naturalised British subject. He has exhibited with the London Group, becoming a member in 1952. A retrospective exhibition was held in 1956 at the Whitechapel Art Gallery.
