Description
The Goddess Niobe was an Argive, daughter of Phoroneus by the Nymph Teledice (or Cero, or Peitho). She was the first mortal woman with whom Zeus mated, the 'mother of mankind', and by him she gave birth to Argos and Pelagus.
Signed and dated Benno Schotz, 1923 and numbered 7, silver, hallmarked, Edinburgh, 1970 - on black slate circular plinth, 4.5 ins in diameter 1.5 ins high. Provenance: Dr J. Shanks, Ayr.
This piece is from an edition of nine, cast in 1969/70, two of which (including this) were cast in silver and submitted to the Edinburgh Assay Office in Sepember 1970.
